I hear you on the camping with kids. Ours are 6 & 9, so no weight weenie when they come. But we sneak away and do things like Havasupai falls without them some.
And as an Eagle Scout who's done Philmont, I never really stop thinking like its a backcountry trek. I go for lightweight whenever possible.
