Indirectly they were - a lot of Japanese imperialism stemmed from the fanatical belief that the emperor (revered as a god) had to be honored by conquest. The war wasn't the direct result of religion but it certainly helped to ensure the fanatical loyalty of the Imperial army / navy.
Religion has always been a great tool for despots seeking to control the masses - particularly weak-minded masses.
