Re private colleges - just to be clear, there are plenty of good ones that offer merit based financial aid. And there are still some that teach meaningful curriculum - whether classical or practical. I've spent the last 8 years getting 3 into good schools. All three will leave college with no debt - and we are very middle class. My oldest graduated and is employed at a for-profit media outlet(a classical liberal education, approx 80% of the tuition paid for by academic scholarship), kid 2, a junior at USNA, will pay back Uncle Sam for 5 years for her education, and kid 3 is at an affordable state school studying electrical engineering.

I say that, not just because I'm proud, but because it can be done. No one ever told me that.

The piece above matters because our nation needs an educated workforce. I've enver eblieved everyone should go to college - but if your kids wants to work in fields that require an education, the are myriad of potholes and roadblocks to steer around to negotiate that trip - Bachelder illustrates that some are trying to bring some common sense back to the academy.
