Another idea is to go ahead and get a 1/2 ton with a 6'6" bed, and mount a Tommy Lift hydraulic/electric gate (or some other brand) on the back of the truck. I had one on a single cab long bed 3/4 ton, and my TommyLift gate extended the floor of the bed an additional 9" so the inside was actually 8'9", and then you could fold down the gate so it laid flat, and the flat surface of the bed was 11'9". Not to mention, the gate could pick up 1000# so a garden tractor, or motorcycle, or even a full sized fridge was no effort. Many times, my young son would roll the huge 200# chunks of the trees I was cutting for firewood up onto the liftgate and operate it himself.
