I was spanked but never hit with an object like a spoon or a belt. My Mom could Odd Job her shoe around corners, though.
As we got older, say 9/10, the spankings (never very frequent) stopped. My parents were masters of taking away the exact thing we coveted so the threat of not playing sports was enough.
They were a stalwart and unmovable pair, which I think is so important: If they said X was going to happen if I did Y it always did.
I slapped my kids hands when they were little. They hated the ceremony of it. I never hit them anywhere else with anything other than my open hand. Again, the shame of the whole deal was enough.
Finally, as many have said over the years, kids don't come with an owners manual, what works for one may not for another.
