My Grandmother lived off of SS alone for the 10 years that she was a widow after (self imployed) Grandpa died. She was always very tight with her budget and had very little money to spend on anything. I think I saw this as a child and promised myself that I would plan better and have resources upon my retirement to help out other family members if possible. I look forward to living a comfortable retirement, and helping out the Grandkids however I can, whether it be physically or financially.
I think if you are in your 40s and are reading this thread, you should be doing some heavy duty investing for the future....it isn't going to happen on it's own, and there is no gaurentee that the government SS program will be there for you. Go to DaveRamsey.com and get started.
