Most of the drivers you see out there, except in the top rungs, are "funded" either via themselves or other sponsors. It is pitiful but that is the way it works. Rich old fat guys who are a few seconds a lap slower than the rest are out there because they have the cash. While talented drivers who have not been noticed watch from the sidelines. And as was noted above the good ones have been karting since they were young.
