If you're willing to wait to find the "right" car, I'd recommend holding out for at least an "E", and I slightly prefer the 2.4L cars. There's a fair bit more punch to the car, and you won't regret it every time you out-drag your buddy... :-)
I bought my '73E when I was living in Edmonton from a guy in Red Deer for _much_ less than your cap, and haven't regretting it. Mine did need some minor mechanical work and a paint job, but I'm still under your budget.
The only parts that differ from your buddy's are one's you wouldn't really be swapping anyway.
