That's my experience. To get a car that drives and looks like a 944 should (when it was new) it comes in right around $10,000.

My 83 NA I bought in 2006 for $500 - it was a nice looking body and had a good engine but everything else was extremely tired. Over the nine years since I've replaced the entire suspension, 2 transaxles, and bunches of other stuff. At present, I've got $11,207.98 in it, almost all in parts.

My 86 951 I bought in 2008 for $2,000. As of today, I've spent $6,943.30 on new parts. Plus I bought a wrecked 87 951 for parts - which so far, I've used the engine (it had 116K miles) , some suspension stuff, the sport seats and a bunch of other parts - and have a good stockpile for future problems (incl an LSD transaxle) . So all together, I figure I've got $10,943 in my 951.

$10,000 really does seem to be the sweet spot to get a well sorted out car.
