April 19, 1942 — the freighter, Empire Dryden, was torpedoed and sunk by U-572 off of Oregon Inlet. One the same day The British freighter, Harpagon, was torpedoed and sunk by U-109 off of Cape Hatteras. She was loaded with planes, tanks, and over 2000 tons of explosives. 41 people died.
