I'm having problems finding your engine # as well. The source I use indicates the following:

6=six cylinder

3=S engine

0=1970 year

Now, here's the confusion. The next two digits, 35, indicate a '70 US-T which it cannot be if it is already an S. The last four digits, 3583, do not fall within the range of S engines produced in 1970. So, I'm puzzled. The engine type may help solve this problem, or some other source may have the answer. At this point, I would simply say it is not a 3.0 from a 78--if the numbers you posted are correct.

However, if you misread the numbers and the third digit is actually 8 instead of 0, then the engine decodes to a 1978 SC engine 3.0L.
