Could be someone just got the idea to do it or more likely they did some market research that concluded people react positively to inclusionary messaging.
If the later is the case it's just smart business and they don't really care too much if it turns some people off as they are going for the larger audience.
It's only pandering if you are of the opinion that inclusion is a weakness.
