Get it down as early in the am as possible. Have as many helpers as you can muster. Butt the sod pieces tight against one another and stagger the joints like a brick wall. A sharp utility knife can be used to trim.
I don't think the bits of gravel will harm anything.

Not an expert but did lay down a bunch of sod with guys that were back in my 20s.
