Their 'explosives expert' is an imbecile. A simple look at the impact angle tells anyone who's ever fired a mortar knows exactly what happened. Mortars go up, then come down...in a nice smooth arc. For that to have been IF, he'd have to have been laying down. Realistically, what happened is that he was kneeling/leaning over the barrel to feed it and managed to not get out of the way fast/far enough.
