On occasion I have resorted to keeping a pair of more secure sandals or old sneakers behind the seat I can slip on to drive and then return to the flip flops after arrival at my destination.

When I am wearing flip flops and will be driving, I slip the flip flops off and drive barefooted. I heel toe better barefooted than I do with shoes on!
