Last tree I cut down was a 35-40 foot pine that was dead. I did it the old, old fashioned way with an ax. I did have a 75' rope 1/3 of the way down and tied to the truck with tension. It was fun, but the rest I have all done with a chain saw. I have always had people with more experience helping and that helps quite a bit. It isn't bad if you are careful and watch what you are doing, but if you are uncomfortable, hire it out.
