I am a native of Murfreesboro. I've traveled quite a bit and you can't beat the weather in California. Central Tennessee is hot and humid in the summer. There are 4 distinct seasons and winters are generally pretty mild except for the last few years they were COLD by our standards. Fall is beautiful! There are several large employers in the county: Middle Tennessee State University, Nissan and State Farm Insurance. Housing is very reasonable compared to the west coast. It is true that you are 6 plus hours from the coast, but there are lots of lakes within a 60 mile drive and plenty of camping and hiking opportunities. I second the opinion on no tent camping - too hot and buggy in the summer. The people are generally friendly as long as you don't compare them to where you came from in an unfavorable light. Lots of people make that mistake and wonder why they can't make friends. Some parts of the city are better to live in than others depending upon your tolerance for traffic and the type of home you want.
