My company is going even more to a "matrix" structure - more bosses, fewer doers. There are the "line" managers via a conventional "chain of command" structure, and "project leaders" who are also supervisory. This means one group or the other is always pissed off no matter what you do. A lose-lose situation for the workers bees.
As a result, I have something like 4 day-to-day bosses right now.
The company is woefully top heavy, and the bosses all think they are working hard managing others. The bosses are mostly ex-project leaders, not technical workers who actually do the work, so they put a much higher value on project management than on actually designing, building and testing new and current products.
Having said all that, I probably have (1) "real" boss - the wife, and (2) "bosses in training" - my daughters.
