+1.
I am fortunate to have a mechanic who encourages me to participate. He recently closed his shop at my home airport, so he came to my hangar for the last annual.
When he showed up, I already had the airplane up on jacks to swing/inspect the landing gear, the seats and floorboards were already out to inspect the control cables, and all inspection plates were removed. I replace the filters that are required, and after he gives me the thumbs up, I put everything back together again.
It's fun, I learn about the airplane, and I'm not paying an hourly rate for a pro to undo dozens of screws to open up access panels.
