Beyond this, smog is a bit of a red herring these days as many states permit special purpose registrations for old cars that do not require testing. Here in OR the option is available once the car is 25 years old.

I'm well aware if that. It is the cut off here too but there are a bunch of changes to the '75 911 that I didn't want on my car, not smog based. We don't have the allowances you speak of. I lived in CA for 30 years and COfor the last 15. I've been playing the smog game since I got licensed.
