One of the main things that is important to do is to actually verify that the car exists (using someone/some agency that is totally independent of the seller).
One guy that had a long thread about a scam he was victim of thought he had verified the car's existence, but the problem was that the person verifying was recommended by the seller and was part of the scam - the buyer even talked to this person on the phone, but it all turned out to be a lie/scam, and the car was never even in the seller's possession.
