This is my approach, and I've only tried this once, at a time when I didn't have the cash.
"Hey, nice 993." Or some other reference to the model, indicating that I knew a bit about it.
"How many miles..." And some other small talk about usage, care, etc.
"Have you ever thought of selling it?" And this is where the conversation gets interesting. They'll either throw out a number or say something like 'not for sale'. If they say, not for sale, I just give them my phone number and say, "if you do decide to sell, please call me. I'm really interested. It's for me, not for resale." And that's the truth.
If they say a number, maybe I'll negotiate if I had the cash. And then I would have a walk-away price, as someone has said, prices can be looked up on the interwebs.
