M Reid got it - Crepe Myrtle.
When I learned the Latin (botanical) names of plants in college - my fellow classmates and I often used word association.
For example.....the Holly family is
Aquafoliacea.....Hollies often have shiny leaves as does water (Aqua)....
For the Crepe Myrtle......
Lagerstroemia indica.......we like this plant and we also like beer.....(Lager).
True story.
