IIRC there is a way to return the vehicle to stock and make the tuner usable for another vehicle. But I think you're right, I'd be very cautious buying a used tuner. I've been on Ford Truck forums where guys bought used tuners and they were useless because the owner didn't return their vehicle to stock before selling.
