The 964 was and will always be in my eyes a 'test bed' vehicle that was made up very quickly to cope with the rapidly avalanching EPA and DOT rules that Porsche had put off on the 911.
The 964 was made during what could be considered very dark years for Porsche, and although I consider the 1989 Carrera 4 sort of an icon it is a car that suffers many troubles along with the Carrera 2.
I don't think the 964 looks bad at all. It's just what is under the skin. The basic 911 platform was so dated it's amazing they got 25 years out of that same basic design. Goes to show how good it is/was. To launch the 911 into the next phase it took major re-working and that's what the 964 was. But the 964 was never polished, developed, honed, and cared for in the sense the original was; and it was duly scrapped after a very short run for Porsche standards.
Am I somewhat romantic about the 964? Yes because it was the 911 that was coming off the assembly line when I visited Stuttgart in 1991. Would I drive one? Absolutely. But it wouldn't be my first choice.
However, to me the Carrera 2 in question looks neat. But I still couldn't vote hot, because it's still a 964 underneath and my mind can't get past this.
