Yep, it is long dead. Today's mid level pro-sumer SLR will beat the image quality of the Kodachrome at it's prime. I have a scanner here at work that cost more than my first house. It can do fantastic scans. I can scan some of my old Kodachrome images and they are not as good as a today's digital cameras.
Of course the BIG difference is some of those old slide are from the 60s and 70s and still look great. How many of or early digital photos can you find? You grandkids will never get to look through a big box of photos. At some point most people lose their old digital files. Film will still be there ready to be scanned.
