While what the trooper did was laudable, he really was just doing his job. It was just another day for a trooper, but that's what they're paid to do. He didn't face any danger and it doesn't sound like he applied any life saving first aid. He kept the guy awake and kept him from going into shock long enough for emergency medica personnel to get on the scene. Being in the same place at the same time I am confident that any Pelican would have done the same. I would be disappointed if there is anyone on this board who wouldn't have. The trooper will get accolades and compensations and he will deserve all the attention he gets.
But at the same time we live in a world where it's just accepted that an old white man can walk into any establishment and be given a cup of water simply for the asking. But a young black girl in the same situation, same time and same place is told that she doesn't get that kind of consideration. She wasn't injured. Her life didn't depend on getting a glass of water. By she was injured to the soul because she was told that she wasn't good enough to receive basic human consideration just because she was who she is.
One man stopped to make her feel better and maybe heal a bit of the injury to that soul and show a little back girl that not all of society is indifferent to her. Any of us would have helped that trucker as he was taking his last breath. How many of us would have offered that black girl a glass of water.
