A friend once told me of having to clear out an elderly lady's house after she died.
The stacks of newspapers and paper bags were sort of expected. The thing that stuck in his mind was the box labeled, "Pieces of string too short to use".
My parents raised part of their family in the Thirties. I remember a drawer full of paper and plastic bags, but that was about it.
