They used to say you need cat5 for anything over 10meg.
Way back in the stone ages the first network where I work was AppleTalk. Ethernet cards were very expensive back then, and was used only for sharing printers. Despite my advice to run cat 5 they put in phone wires. My office, the engineering department was the first to go to ethernet and cat 5. It was for access to our department file server and large graphic files. As the company upgraded to cat 5 at first the network separated by buildings with a burried cat 5 between them and a router at each building. Then the buildings were connected with fiber optic it was 400meg and at that time you couldn't run anything over cat 5 that fast. Now it's ALL cat 5 with 100 Gigabit connecting the buildings and 1 gigabit to all the desks.
The speeds over cat 5 now is amazing.
