Found this on Rennlist.

"I used to have noisey lifters on my 87 s4. It progressivly got worse, particualrly if the car sat for a few weeks.

I assumed the little springs inside my hydraulic lifters were shot (had this happen on a volvo), so I bought 32 used lifters, (not cheap) and just before taking the cams out a time saving miracle occured. Marc anderson mentioned something to me in a routine phone call.

"S4s with the short cams have a rubber plug that blocks two oil circulation holes that are no longer needed. The plugs go bad and literally fall out."

I checked noisy head and what do you know, one had fallen out and the other was badly warped with age.

His solution is small metal rods that block the passages with something that wont age or warp.

I have not had lifter noise since. Thats in 4 years, 27,000 miles of use!
