At Shiloh, a two-day battle in 1862 in which more than 23,000 American men were killed or wounded, the confederate 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment needed a chaplain. Fortunately, there was a man called of God in their midst.
Louis Napoleon Nelson
He was a private in Co. M, 7th Tennessee Cavalry.He began his military service as a cook, then a rifleman, rode with Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest during the war., and finally a chaplain. He would stay on as chaplain for the next four campaigns, leading services for both Confederate and Union soldiers. He latter on say this "number of Yankee soldiers joined during a worship service and, after its conclusion, “all shook hands and went back to fighting.
