In general, tattoos are are lazy way to distinguish yourself.
They are all the rage in a society that values self expression through decoration rather than achievement.
There are a million ways to get meaningful recognition, but they all require effort. You can excel at your profession, be a trusted and reliable friend, an accomplished musician, any number of ways to establish an identity. Tattoos are frequently the lazy mans substitute; "Look at me, I'm a badass. Look at me, I'm a gearhead. Look at me, I'm an artist"
You think Einstein had E=mc2 tattooed on his ass? I doubt it.
