I posted before you added the last part. I don't know her situation, and i have looked at assisted living and nursing homes for my dad. So I know some of these places are expensive. If I couldn't afford it, I would have to look at other alternatives. Some people also purchase long term care insurance. I don't.
My grandmother was put into a nursing home years ago, she didn't have much money and they simply took whatever she had left and her SS, so there are places for less than 10K a month.
