I drive a relative's 2003 fairly regularly - handles bad weather well but I would never EVER buy one for myself. What a gas pig! Between 18-20 mpg. Horrid. Like offensively horrid. Maybe they're better now but I dunno. It also has not been maintenance free by a long shot - the auto-leveling suspension is an unnecessary, overpriced, quirky POS ($2k last year), the front brake calipers seized last winter (another $2k repair), there is rust forming on the back tailgate and it handles like a Civil War era ironclad battleship. That said, it'll haul things and get through bad weather all right but whooboy will you pay for it. Granted there's a 12-year difference between the 2003 I use and the 2015 you're discussing but still - it hasn't changed that much has it?

I'll drive my Mercedes unless there's snow / ice / crap on the ground. It's just a way better car. The 4-runner is easier to carry surfboards though (although the Medcedes does that too without it being a big deal). YMMV.
