Agreed. There's no way to change a couple millennia of behavior/tradition and Pope Francis is well aware of this.
His being Pope secures his position of wealth and luxury. Were he truthful, he would abandon the lavish lifestyle of being Pope and tend to a tiny flock somewhere in the desolate plains of Argentina or wherever he came from. The chances of that happening are close to zero, I think.
Nevertheless, per him, everybody else has succumbed to the demon of the dollar and must repent. It's about time we got a Pope who is proving to be expert at
PR. He claims to not be a liberal, a rich one at that. That photo in the Fiat proves it. He so humble.
