I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I've had seven 996/986 with original transmissions and between 60k and 135k. I believe the detent is more preventative, and I don't think having to replace every syncro is typical. But it sucks if it happens to you. I know a guy locally that's looking at a transmission rebuild on a 40k mile 2008 997S.
Still, it's better than a slushbox.
