The several times I had to replace the windshield on my 914 vintage race car and it seemed to be needed every 3 or so years due to stone and sand damage, I had Safelite do the actual glass install. I first had them remove the old glass and they have a cleaner that removed the old adhesive better than I could do. The I used a wire wheel and cleaned the channel to bare metal and then used a zinc brush on primer, usually two coats and then a spray coat of body color. A few days later the Safelite person came back and put the glass in and used the rubber cover piece that some referred to as the dodge van rubber.
