Mechanic got the pistons out today. He is going to check tomorrow to make sure the cylinders, pistons etc are all within spec to go back in with just rings. I was surprised how clean and free the rings were.
The pistons are missing two different oil relief holes. The holes in the oil scraper ring groove are not drilled thru to connect to the inside of the piston to let the oil out of the groove that is being scraped off the cylinder walls. The are also holes in the piston skirt below where the wrist pins go that let the oil from the wrist pins out (there is a Porsche tech bulletin on drilling these).
The crank and rod bearings look good, mechanic wants to replace them anyway, since they are fairly cheap and it's apart with 70k on it.
There was quite a bit of carbon on the tops of the pistons for only 2k miles since they were cleaned. Mechanic says I need to switch to a better oil because there is quite a bit of soot in the crank and heads. Hard to say since there was so much blow by and oil burning.
