I've tried that before. Had a special winding face/spindle made that had rod extensions that locked into the tailstock. Bobbins slipped over the rods to hold them in place. Caused a lot of vibration, and scratched bobbins. One PITA about that method was... each bobbin need a beginning lead soldered to the coil wire, and secured to the coil. The placement of the beginning lead, so that it did not get in the way, was always a hassle, even with separator blocks...
A quick and dirty test using a pair of rubber bands and a drum stick show the belt-drive is viable.
