me and my boys who are 7 and 10 checked out Castaic Lake yesterday - it was mid-afternoon so I didn't expect anything to be biting. It was more about checking out the site. The lower lagoon looked interesting with nice looking camping sites on one side and a decent park area on the other. You can tell the drought is impacting the water level too. You could see some smaller fish in the water but as I said, nothing was biting. Normally I would get out there in the very early morning.

I'm looking for something that is fishable - so not requiring a ton of skill but I don't want to just take them to troutdale in Ventura (trout farm). I want them to learn how to actually fish...
Castaic is more of a "Bass Boat" lake, don't think you'll have much luck there. If you wanted to go a bit further north there's the Kern River. The 20 mile stretch of the upper Kern is fishing well from early AM to around noon. You'd probably want to spend the night, Kern Lodge is nice The Kern Lodge - Kernville - United States

You can try Piru, they rent boats and "party barges". They catch some decent trout there. Otherwise, fish the piers down in your area or in the harbors. Always something swimming around there.
