Check with your local library. Many library groups now accept donations of old books. In some cases, they go into the library collection. In others they go to hospitals, thrift stores, etc.
My wife sells books on line for the local friends of the library organization. Library collections manager gets first dibs, my wife gets second, and the in-library book store gets third. The book store routinely sells hardbacks at 3:00 and soft covers at 1:00. Anything worth over about $10 goes to on-line sales and ends up on Amazon or Ebay. Profits go back into the library to fund things outside the normal city budget.
