My dad would tell me that when he was a kid growing up (in Illinois) the kids would bring their rifles to school and lean 'em up against the wall be the front door of the classroom (this was in the '30s and early '40s). On the way home they would plink at cans or bag a squirrel.

The mentality is different today.
