A 914 was my first car as a teen in the early 80s.
I've had many of them since, from stock 1.7 to 350 hp V8. I daily drove them for years, putting at least 500,000 miles total (mostly in stock 73 and 74 2.0 versions). Worked on them, restored, maintained, etc.
Obviously, I loved the 914!
That being said, here in my late 40s, I can't see ever owning one again.
They can be fun little cars, but the reality is they are nothing like a 911. They are built by VW, with a VW engine and lots of VW parts, built to VW standards of the day.
Which isn't necessarily bad. But is what it is.
If you want a very spartan, bare bones, "vintage" sports car, though, it might fit that need. Because on the upside, it's a very lightweight, mid-engined, 5 speed, 4 wheel disc braked targa - a fairly futuristic and unusual combo in the early 70s.
