The idea is to allow the fitment of wider tyres on the rear but to keep the overall 'rolling' diameter of the front & rear tyres the same as each other (or as close as possible).
Eg with the original 205/55 & 225/50 combination the overall diameters are:
205/55 = 23.88 in
225/50 = 23.86 in
