Good options
Well, I'm not sure how modern, but it's very hard to go wrong with a 1911
Another great option is a Browning High Power
The mustang and challenger to the Glock's camaro
Smith and Wesson M&P
Springfield Armory XD family
Both are reasonably priced, reliable plastic weapons. I think both have a better grip angle than a Glock
Sig Sauer make lots of nice guns that are very well liked, metal or plastic, lots of styles and sizes. I think the 226 is popular.
Beretta 92fs is another common option.
How much are you looking to spend and what are you going to do with it?
