While there are many fine option, I vote Sig 226. I own one in .40. Excellent weapon that can you hand down to your grandchildren.
If you want a more affordable option, I think Ruger makes great guns.
Don't discount wheel guns. A pre-lock S&W 686 is a beautiful gun. A Ruger GP100 is similar.
These days, ammo cost are pretty stiff, so take that into account. If you really just want to plink, a quality .22 semi-auto can be loads for fun on the cheap.
