For reliability, you can't beat a revolver. Goes 'bang' every time. But revolvers aren't considered to be modern anymore...
Heckler & Koch makes some superbly reliable spoons, as does the other manufacturers mentioned above. The ergonimics of an HK P30 grip is significantly better than the 2x4 plank of wood feel you get from a Glock. Put one in your hand, and it simply feels like it was cast with your hand in mind.
The downside to many modern firearms is their light-weight, IMHO. You definately feel more of the crack of a 9mm being fired out of a polymer framed gun (like an H&K or Glock) than a metal frame gun (like a Beretta 92FS). Target re-aquisition may require a bit more focus with a lighter gun.
