I too have an '84 auto in possible need of a head gasket. I have pulled the heads from several 928 engines, both 16v and 32 v. Personally speaking, it is not an easy job with the engine out of the car. I am certain there are folks who can pull the heads off anything through the exhaust pipe blindfolded, but I am not one of those. I have never tried to pull a head with the engine in the car, and I don't ever plan to try it, so I am off your topic to some degree. The 3 or 4 hours it takes to pull the engine will be offset by the easy access of the engine being out of the car, the ease of cleaning up everything, as well as the ease of access to some pretty difficult bolts in the cam towers as well as the head bolts / studs themselves. I would not entertain doing just one head, what ever drives the need to replace one head gasket is certainly at play in the other head gasket also.
