As a disclaimer I have never done this. I was however at a PCA tech session of a reputable shop. What they do is pull the head up all the way up on the stud until it hits the shock tower. They then seal the block with tape ect for debris, and sawzall off the studs leaving enough above the block to grip and remove. They reassemble it will the bolts of the later engines.
