Long ago GE had a center working on developing hard drives. It was bought by MPI, then Control Data and several other corporate turn overs.
We did a lot of work for them. I once suited up in a clean suit and went into the clean room where early hard drives were developed. When I took off that suit I looked like I had taken a shower. I was soaked with sweat.
They usually did the early development and R&D and early production and got the production line up and working in OKC. Then they would take it all apart and ship it to some other plant. Then the local plant would start over with more platters and more capacity.
Some of the first ever drives of the physical size drives are today were engineered here. They had several plants all over the city. It is all gone to China now.
